One of the memorable places you'll visit in İstanbul is Galata Tower. Galata Tower is one of İstanbul’s highest and oldest towers providing you the enchanting panoramic view of the city.
One of the most known stories that are told revolves around an Ottoman aviator Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi. According to Evliya Çelebi’s “Seyahatname”, also known as “the book of travels”, Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi flew from the top of the tower to Üsküdar, a district on the Asian Side, with wings attached to his arms for around 6 kilometers. Despite the spectacular feet, Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi successfully landed on the ground.
The tower was used by the Mehter Band, which is an Ottoman military band, a fire observatory in 1717 because of its excellent bird’s-eye view of the city and also it was used as a watchtower to help defend the city. For this reason, Galata Tower carries a significance for the historic city.
The tower has a restaurant at the very top with a panoramic view of the Bosporus, the Golden Horn, the Blue Mosque and many other monumental landmarks. The restaurant also serves the palace cuisine of the Ottoman Empire besides its rich menu.
